489 Henry

489 Henry Street

Located in the landmarked neighborhood of Cobble Hill, Brooklyn, this 1850’s townhouse was completely gutted and rebuilt from the inside out. The traditional landmarked façade was left completely contextual and almost untouched. But once inside, the interior transforms into an elegant, warm, totally modern design statement. The focal point of this home is a 20′ high open atrium with a glass wall system that opens completely from wall to wall, seamlessly uniting the house with a striking blue stone patio, green backyard and separate guest house/work studio in the corner of the property. Major structural work was required to complete the transformation from a neglected 4 family house into a stunning 4000 square foot single-family mansion. The basement grade was excavated two feet down and a new slab was poured. New steel stairs were installed, and joists were placed throughout the building. The two floors of the rear wall were removed and replaced with a 20’ high glass curtain wall and NanaWall sliding window. Additionally, the roof, windows, plumbing, electrical and mechanical systems were completely replaced. Not only has this house been completely rebuilt, but the latest sustainable features were also implemented. This home’s green features include a solar power system, sustainably grown hickory floors, low VOC premium paint, and an Energy Star rated four-zone HVAC system.
